The SPFYBA uses umpires for the Junior, Major and Senior Division games.
In the Junior and Major Divisions adults serve on a strictly voluntary basis.
Our teenage umpires receive the following fees:
Major Division:
With two Umpires working:  Home Plate - $20.00 and Bases - $13.00 or One Umpire only- $30.00.
Junior Division:
With two Umpires working:  Home Plate - $17.00 and Bases - $11.00 or One Umpire only- $25.00.
When possible we schedule in the Major Division one adult or ‘senior’ teenage home plate umpire and one second/third year teenage base umpire crew.  In the Junior Division games have two teenage umpires working together whenever possible; sometime for training purposes we will have one adult with two first year teenage umpires.
Senior Division games use certified ASA or National Federation umpires.  The Umpires receive a fee of $60.00 per game.

Requirements and Training

Anyone 13 years of age or older and in good health is eligible to umpire, provided they attend a minimum of two rules interpretation clinics and one mechanics clinic.  The clinics are held in late February and early March.  Applicants will be notified well in advance of the scheduled dates.  The umpires receive a shirt and cap uniform which must be worn during the games.  Anyone interested in serving as an Umpire can contact Mike Dempsey.

Sportsmanship and Association Philosophy

Since our umpires are either adult volunteers or teenagers it is expected that all managers, coaches, players, parents, and fans will exhibit an appreciation for the efforts of all the umpires by demonstrating proper behavior at all games.  Any acts of abuse or intimidation directed towards our umpires before, during or after any game will not be tolerated.  The Scotch Plains Fanwood Youth Baseball Association is striving to prepare each umpire with a thorough knowledge of the rules, but experience is the single most important factor in improving as an official.  Mistakes and bad calls are part of the youth baseball experience, and we expect our umpires to learn from them.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT IF UMPIRING WERE EASY

EVERYONE WOULD BE DOING IT!!!
